Another great weekend..Geez, where's Winter?  I'm just really hoping Winter doesn't show her face come March or April.  S and I went on some very nice road rides along with some of the strongest headwinds I've ever ridden in.  What doesn't knock you down makes you stronger, right?  That's what I was telling myself when I wanted to get off my bike and huck my bike into the wind.  

I also watched this new song by M.I.A a bunch of times and just about finished up a few new tote bags for the store.

So..I've decided to give the Etsy shop another go.  I feel like sometimes I'm not honest with myself about what I really want to do and what I 'think' I'm good at.  People are constantly telling me that I should sell my art..so here I go.  If your interested take a peek.  I have lots more coming soon.

One thing I'm not good at however is photography. I promise these are much cooler in person. They look great framed. I have several in my home.

Last night S, myself and my girlfriend Jessica went to my second class with Abbey at Centered City Yoga.  I am thrilled that I finally made the leap and started going..finally.  I love love love it so much. It's great for my body and my head and I want to continue on continuing on with this yoga thing.

I keep talking and wanting to start doing yoga consistently.  S finally told me if I want to do it just do it...duh.  I don't know what I've been waiting for. So starting this week I'm going to start going twice a week.  I think it will help me with my other endeavors nicely.  So in twenty-twelve I want to breathe, bend, be.  As for the random assortment of pictures below, I've been playing around with Picasa's editing site Picnik..I love it.

Get in the best running and biking shape of my life while hanging outside with my S...and my girlfriends. Hang out with my girlfriends more, even if it's just a hike or a coffee. Start a journal jotting down my ideas and things that inspire me. Be with my family more.

I was in need of a little change around the casa.It's amazing the difference a new coat of paint and some fabric will do to the place. I LOVE it!! Don't mind the wood + newspaper + duct tape on the fireplace, just trying to keep out the kitty. Trying to come up with some ideas to artfully hide it all.

Our first day of skiing today, and it was so fun. S and I went up to Solitude, which only has about 5k of trails open (all of the Redman Loops). Skate skiing is hard. If you think you're in shape just go ahead and try skate skiing...geez, I thought I was going to die.

Mr.S and myself finally took the leap and got a kitten.  I'll be honest I almost backed out I was so nervous...so much responsibility.  I can only imagine the nervousness with an actual baby..yikes!  Mr.S came up with the name Ponteuf after Anouk's imaginary Kangaroo in 'Chocolat'.  She is seriously so sweet and cuddly...I love her.

This week has been..how do you say.. very crappy.  Nothing in particular just general crappiness.  Nothing has made me want to get out the door...until I read this. Thanks S. 

JOSH COX: If we only did things when we felt like it, we wouldn’t be very good at anything. I love running, writing, announcing on TV, and connecting with folks via social media but I don’t love them all the time. The professional world is competitive, no matter your discipline. Doing something only when you “feel like it” is a guaranteed formula for failure. Passion isn’t enough, talent isn’t enough; you have to commit to putting in the work. Somewhere, there’s someone just as passionate and talented as you that’s willing to hone their craft daily – they’ll beat you on game day. Pursue your passion and be willing to put in the painstaking work it takes to succeed. Lots of folks want success without sacrifice but life doesn’t work that way. Marathon running is a great metaphor for life because in order to succeed you have to make daily deposits over a long period of time. I’m a part of the Mammoth Track Club, our training group rivals any on the planet. We meet every morning at 8:30 and in the afternoons for gym work. Surrounding yourself with others who are working towards a common goal pays huge dividends and provides accountability. Even still, there are many days I don’t feel like getting out the door. Something that renowned children’s author Madeline L’Engle said has always stuck with me, “Inspiration usually comes during work, rather than before it.” I’ve found this true in just about every area of life. In running, inspiration rarely finds you on the couch; it likes to wait around the first corner. On days when I’m having trouble getting motivated, I shut my mind off, get dressed, lace ‘em up, and get out the door. It’s not inspiration’s job to come find us, it’s our job to go find inspiration. The key to training, and life, is taking that first step. The first step is the best step; it’s where intent meets action. Don’t talk about it; be about it. When you don’t feel like doing what you know needs to be done, take the variable of “the choice” out of the equation. Shut the mind off and just begin.

Mount Olympus

It was my 31st birthday this weekend...ugh,  It's weird getting older.  S and I had a awesome weekend though running a bunch, climbing, and I finally got to the top of Mount Olympus.  I've been up there a bunch but not to the summit.  It was impressively steep. 4200' of climbing in 3.1 miles is not too shabby.  It was so beautiful up there too...the leaves are still fully on fire.

My Mr.S' brother and girlfriend came into town this weekend and we took them to Arches for the first time.  They live in North Carolina so it was a bit of a shock to see such an amazing and unique place.  We haven't been there in over ten years and it was so good to be back. By the way the hands down best restaurant in Moab is Singha Thai.  It's off of Center Street and is so awesome...just saying.

Octoberfast 5000m

Mr. S talked me into doing this race put on by Jake Krong and Andrea North(#14 and #7).  Two super fast runners who are both training for the Olympic trials.  I wasn't going to race it but decided after a warm up in Sugarhouse park to face my fears of running a 5000 meter on the track with Olympic hopefuls and other super fast athletes.  Ever since high school track I've had a hard time with training and racing on the track...I don't know. I think it just signifies serious discomfort and always being on the verge of throwing up from pushing yourself so hard.  Alas, I was not disappointed. Within the first lap of going out WAY too fast, I fell into the familiar groove of pushing your body so hard you're afraid to look at your heart rate monitor and being just close enough to running so hard you hit the wall or just extremely uncomfortable.  I finished in 20:32, second place female...since there were only two females out there but hey I'll take it.  I am really really glad I decided to be brave and try this.  We met some very cool inspiring fellow runners and I got a new 5k personal record.  Now if you excuse me I'm going to go and vomit.

Ten hours of sewing later..I finished my queen sized quilt.  I love it so much.  It was fairly easy, the hardest part was dealing with the large size of the quilt.  Trying to sew the lines in the middle was a bit tricky but I persisted and voila.

Mr. S ran in the Holladay Lions 5k on Saturday. It was so awesome! S lead the ENTIRE race from start to finish complete with a police escort...the entire way. Good job S.

I've been sewing like the wind these days. It's weird how inspiration comes and goes. I have many projects that are coming together nicely. I just finished this pillow and a dress that I'll take pictures of later.

Maroon Bells Four Passes

S and I just got back from Aspen, Colorado. We went out to run the Maroon Bells Four Passes, which is a 28 mile run that starts at 9500' and climbs up over four passes that are 12,400'-12,600'. This is one of the most beautiful awesome adventures I've ever been on. The scenery is ridiculously gorgeous...sensory overload.

Climbing up Trail Rider Pass was insanely hard and long. Here I am not feeling too hot but moving along.

Snowmass Lake.

Finished.

1.West Maroon Pass-12,400'   2.Frigid Air Pass-12,400'  3.Trail Rider Pass-12,500'  4.Buckskin Pass-12,600'.

28 Miles, 9000' of climbing, 9 hrs.

One of the best runs ever.

Jupiter Peak

Mr. S, Big Plane and myself went out for a little Park City trail action yesterday. We started out at Sleepy Hollow and dropped into Park City going who knows where...Big Plane led the way through the maze of trail awesomeness that is Park City.

We decided to finish the run up with a little' knee to chin steepness' otherwise known as Jupiter Peak. Such a great run.

Mt. Raymond and Gobblers Knob

S and I ran a very cool little route yesterday. We started at Butler Fork and up up up to Mt. Raymond, and then down and up Gobblers knob. A hard little climb of 5600', if your looking to get your fanny kicked try it out. It was gorgeous up there though and just what I needed to keep me honest about my fitness.

Louisville

We just got back from visiting family in Louisville, Kentucky. It was go go go this trip. We packed in a lot. We ran a bunch while we were out there and let me tell you I have never sweat that much in my life...seriously, it was insane. Humidity is definitely something I am not used to and don't know if I like very much.

We spent the 4th of July at my Mr. S' Mammaw's house. His family is the sweetest.

On Tuesday we went to downtown Louisville and got to see the Muhammad Ali Center museum, Kentucky arts and crafts museum and the Louisville Slugger museum.

Can't wait to go back and miss y'all already!  See the 'southern' is rubbing off on me.

Squaw Peak 50

Yesterday I raced in the Squaw Peak 50 mile trail race. It was a gorgeous 'hot' day and I was psyched to race. I have really put in a lot of training for this race so I felt totally ready for it. My goals were at the beginning of the race to beat my time of 11:18 from the same course a couple of years ago, to qualify for the Western States 100(the Boston of Ultra) by running under 11 hours and to place top 5. The night before the race I was talking with S about how hard I could push myself with out totally bonking, being that for this race I was actually ready to 'race' an ultra...not just finish. So we came up with a game plan and I put it to work.

So we were off.  I raced about the first 12 miles with my papa which was cool.  I was trying to climb with a purpose swinging my arms and not being 'pokey', I was feeling great. At about mile 24 I saw my mom who started an hour earlier than we all did and she was looking good.  I was excited to get to the 25 mile aid station turn around and start the journey back.  I arrived there at 5:07...not bad. It was starting to get muy toasty and I was pouring water all over myself in an attempt to stay cool.  I have problems running in the heat so I really have to take care of myself.  On the 9 mile stretch of the Bonneville Shoreline trail, I kept looking back to see if I could see anyone gaining on me an lo and behold I was close to being caught by another girl...I was in second place overall at this point so that kind of lit a fire under my butt.  

This is right when I saw S at about mile 39.  He was coming to run with me for the last 11 miles.  He told me that the overall female leader was just a couple of minutes ahead of me.  I was on a mission to catch her and not get caught by the girl behind me.  It's interesting during races I will usually get into a super competitive mode and I can usually finish up the last 10 miles strong. So I was eating a lot of gels and getting ready mentally to attack. 

This is when I caught up with the overall female leader with about 6-7 miles to the finish line.  She looked back at me in shock, I don't think she thought there was any way I was going to catch her...

but I did.  I ran the next 6-7 miles fast and hard, passing my dad on the way, right after Hope Campground aid station.  S was doing exactly what I needed looking back and 'checking' if she was on my tail and the answer was no.

I won first overall female at the Squaw Peak 50 mile trail race in 10:36:47.  Seriously, I could not be more happy!

Pocatello 50

Mr. S ran in the Pocatello 50 this weekend. This is such an awesome race and a really hard run, you definitely earn your dinner. Almost everyone was totally covered in mud from the waist down. S said yesterday "I don't think I'll ever do this again"...we'll see.

S, pre-race day.  I took this because he said this is exactly when he started to get nervous.

S did awesome he finished just under 11:00 hours on a course that was 4 miles long.

a great end to a rainy week

Now I don't know about everyone else but this week this rain infested week was SO SO SO hard. I really don't know if I can take any more rain or snow. Luckily the weekend pulled through for us and we got some nice weather. A few of the highlights were..

*Racing in the Grandeur Fun Run which was awesome. The race goes up the west face of Grandeur and it is steep! I went off course for a good bit and blew a top 3 finish...crap. But other than that it was a great time.

*S and I after a very large Ziti dinner went up and hiked around on the Mill D trail. You can get about a mile'ish up the trail before hitting a lot of snow.

*Got farther up Mt.Aire via Birch Hollow and got stuck in a torrential downpour. We were literally running in a stream down the trail.

All in all a great ending to a rainy week.

A Grand Adventure

Ever since Mr.S ran the double crossing of the Grand Canyon with our friend Seann back in the day I've been itching to do it. I finally got my chance...S and I drove down on Thursday and set up camp at Mather Campground.

This is before we took the plunge into the big ditch on Thursday...making sure we knew where to start in the morning. We ran from the Bright Angel Trailhead on the South rim all the way to the North rim and back.

We had a few encounters with bats.. running in the dark with headlamps having bats fly at your face is quite exciting.

I felt pretty awesome until about half way up the north rim. The north rim was never ending and painful. There were some pretty amazing views though and lots of exposure.

Right after we finished our 48 mile 13 hour and change run. What an awesome adventure...amazing!

Saturday we did A LOT of nothing...and Scrabble. Such an awesome trip, cant wait for the next adventure.

Timp Shadow Trail 5k

S and I ran in the Cascadia Trail Series Timp Shadows 5k on Saturday. The weather was not so good but it was so much fun! Right from the start I was in some serious oxygen debt and I refused to look at my heart rate...I was scared to see how high it was, thinking if I saw it some sliver of doubt would get into my head about how I couldn't keep this pace up.

The trail was snowy, muddy and slushy but I redlined it the entire way. My final time was 24:58 2nd place female(the race director raced it and got first...sort of lame I thought) and 5th place overall. S placed in 22:44 and took 2nd place overall too. We both won cool rocks and I won a pair of Brooks Cascadia shoes...woo-hoo!

Colorado + Sunshine

My Mr.S and I went on a little road trip to Fruita, Colorado this weekend. For those of you that aren't familiar with Fruita It's like a less crowded Moab. It was unbelievably gorgeous on Saturday...Sunday not so much, but hey we'll take what sunshine we can get.

We ran 24 miles on gorgeous trails like these. It's amazing what some sunshine and warm temps can do for the soul.

The Island of the Antelope

We went out last Friday to Antelope Island State Park and camped out with my family. My padre did a 100 mile race that started on Friday at noon. It was awesome to be able to see him out on the course. He raced so strong.. 21hrs and change ohh-yee I have one cool dad.

The cow bell is a staple for us at races.

S and I ran the 25k on Saturday morning.  It was supposed to be rainy/snowy but it turned out to be gorgeous, so lucky.

S and I went and stayed at the Desert Pearl Inn this weekend and it was the perfect weekend...seriously. The Desert Pearl Inn is such a great little place it's located in Springdale, Utah right outside Zion's National Park. We had such a great time running on two new trails, the Chinle trail and the Guacamole trail.

I think the cactus will be blooming soon, hopefully we can make it back soon to see them in bloom.

Wasatch 100

S and I put in for the Wasatch 100 in the beginning of December 2010. We have been waiting patiently for the February 5th lottery to tell us if we got in or not. I *#!!!@** did not...poo poo, S did. It's kind of funny too because S didn't really want to do it, he wanted to do Leadville. But alas that's how it works doesn't it.?

So now I can pick and choose Leadville in August or Bighorn in June. June is a little too early I think....so, Leadville it is. It will be really cool to do Leadville since I've done the bike a couple of times. Different course but it is a very cool place and it seems fitting that it will be my first 100.

I am SO excited for this racing season.
Let the training begin.

Today went from wallowing in the soupy disgusting air to driving a couple miles up Millcreek and running in the gorgeous sunshine. Today was such a great day up there even got a half mile up the Mt.Aerie trail.

Mr. S and moi got up into Millcreek twice this weekend...woohoo! On Sunday we went on a trail run from Rattlesnake Gulch up onto the pipeline trail and it was gaga gorgeous. I SO needed a little mountain air fix.

Here I am acting like a dork...I mean myself. We went up on Saturday night and hiked up Church Fork in the dark. It was much fun.

Life is sort of slow right now...which is very nice now and again. S and I are planning many adventures and races for the year. So it's a great time to lounge about, build our running bases watch many episodes of the office and just enjoy life.

I've been thinking a lot lately about getting older and just life in general. Deciding I guess about what I want out of my life and what I strive to mold it into.

Life is funny that way...when you're younger you have all these ideas about things that you're supposed to have and be at a certain age. My life is very different than what I had in mind 15 years ago. For that I am immensely grateful.

My heart is full of love for my Mr.S and the beautiful life we share together. Life is what we make of it...create the life you want, there are no cookie cutter molds that you have to follow.

Mr. S and I went up to the Solitude Nordic Center for a little skate skiing action. It was just what I needed...to be up in the mountains, breathing hard away from everything. It was a beautiful day and the snow was perfecto.

My mug shot inspired by the episode of the 'office' that we watched the night before. Mr.S and I are just a little obsessed with that show lately. We've never watched it before so we thought we would see what all the fuss was about...it is so hilarious.

I've been a crafting fool these days.  Spent a good couple of weeks putting together my Christmas cards and I think they turned out very cute...if I do say so myself.

One of these days I'll get a 'real' sewing/crafting room...or table, I'll take what I can get.

S had to have surgery on his knee this week due to a large cyst under his IT band. This was a new experience for us and one I do not wish to relive in the future. He is doing very well and Dr. Cooper says he should be back at it in the next couple of weeks.

One good perk that comes with the territory is when you good friend 'big plane' brings over some handmade spring rolls with a little handmade peanut sauce...yum,yum! Thanks 'big plane'.

Day One

Today is day one of my new marathon training program. I'm using the book by Brad Hudson, 'Run Faster'. Today is workout numero uno, 12 miles easy. S and I are out the door in the 30 degree weather. It is nice to have something to work towards. So here's hoping training goes well and injury free and I get a qualifying time in April for Boston.

This bread is AWESOME, seriously you have to try it! This is the first recipe I've tried from the cookbook Earth to Table and so far so good. Antelope Island 100k

I signed up for the Antelope Island 100k last week,the night before the race I was wondering why. I've never thought less about a running race. We ran in the dark for about 1.5 hrs. I actually really enjoy running in the dark and I was able to run with my dad for awhile. After the second aid station we ran on the beach for 2 miles, we were treated to the most beautiful sunrise. It's pretty surreal Antelope Island It seriously felt like I was running on the beach at the ocean.

From the very start I was having some hip pain...this is a recurring problem I have, I don't know if it's from to few training miles, tight muscles...who knows. But by about mile 20 I was hardly able to lift my left leg. I started the second loop knowing that I shouldn't keep going. I've never dropped from a race before and It was HARD! I would have finished but I knew I would seriously hurt my hip so I took off my number and shamefully walked back down to the tent. Sitting here the morning after I know I made the right decision, I guess that this is part of the 'ultra running' reality... listen to your body. My dad did awesome he finished in 5th place...woo-hoo!

Valley of the Goblins

S and I ran a 50k in Goblin Valley on Saturday. We drove down Friday afternoon to find a full campground. We made do in a BLM style pullout full of RVs that would fit 2 of our houses inside, huge bonfires, blaring music(this is the new thing for camping apparently)...suffice to say I did not sleep well. The race was very fast and totally runable. I made the mistake of wearing my LaSportiva Skylites, I love these shoes but aren't great for flat, hard fast surfaces...I was feeling it by the end. It was muy fun though, a gorgeous sunny day!

Uinta camping

Last weekend the fam went up to the Washington Lake in the Uinta's and spent the weekend camping. Campfires, fishing, running...it was much fun.

Fishing at Trial Lake was good good good. S caught a fish that fed the whole family for the entire weekend.

S and I ran a 'big one' on Saturday...kind of by accident. We were thinking we would be out for 27 miles 5ish hours, ended up with 7hrs and 32 miles. We started out at the Mill D trailhead and got onto the connector trail to mid-mountain in Park City...all the way from the Canyons to Park City Mountain Resort and back. It was an incredible day, the fall colors were spectacular. I hit rock bottom around mile 15-18, but bounced back to finish strong. I think the past couple weeks of building up long runs might have caught up with me...and the heat.

After the run we were feeling pretty darn good about our 50k training day.

wasatch recon

S and I ran mile 75-85(and back) of the Wasatch 100 course on Saturday. I have never been past Sunset Peak above Lake Catherine, it was ga ga gorgeous!
We live in the most awesomely beautiful area, the trails were perfect singletrack and the views were amazing. The only thing lacking was a water source. Iodine wont do you any good if their isn't any water to purify...we ran out with about 5-6 miles to go. I drank so much water once we got to the car I kind of made myself sick...lesson learned.

This is the new thing instead of a heart rock I found a heart made out of wood...very cool.
